Shaanxi woman diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer

A 32-year-old woman in Shaanxi, China, has been diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer after being hospitalized for severe abdominal pain and fever. Despite maintaining a lifestyle free of alcohol and tobacco, medical investigations revealed that her long-term daily consumption of pickled vegetables was a primary contributing factor to the illness.

Dr. Xue Jungang of the Xi'an Red Cross Hospital noted that the liver is often a 'silent organ' because it lacks pain receptors. This means significant damage, even up to 70% of liver cells, can occur without providing clear warning signals to the patient. Pain typically only manifests once malignant tumors have invaded deeply, by which time the cancer is often in an advanced stage.
