Shabana Mahmood announces mixed model for asylum seeker housing
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced a transition to a “mixed model” for asylum seeker accommodation in Britain, aiming for a “fair spread” of migrants across various communities. The policy intends to ensure that no single type of community bears the disproportionate impact of asylum arrivals.
The proposed model includes utilizing houses of multiple occupancy (HMOs), large military sites, medium-sized buildings such as former student apartments, and dispersal housing like bedsits. Mahmood noted that she understands local concerns, citing the use of asylum hotels and dispersal accommodation within her own constituency of Birmingham Ladywood.
The plan follows recent local opposition, such as in Piddington, Oxfordshire, where plans to house over 1,000 asylum seekers at an ex-military base faced protests regarding security and costs. Government officials have acknowledged that migrant arrivals can place significant burdens on local communities.
