Shadow IT poses security risks to companies

Shadow IT, also known as Shadow IT, refers to the use of applications, devices, and IT services within an organization without the knowledge or approval of the official IT department. This phenomenon often arises when employees seek to increase productivity, simplify workflows, or bypass internal processes they perceive as too slow or complicated.

Common examples include the use of private cloud storage, unauthorized SaaS applications, unapproved messenger and collaboration platforms, personal devices for business purposes, and generative AI tools like ChatGPT. Because these tools are used without oversight, they have not been vetted for security, data protection, or compliance, creating significant blind spots and security risks for companies.
