Shadrack Agyei Owusu sues Ghana Police for GH¢5m over alleged unlawful arrest

Shadrack Agyei Owusu, a pharmacist and former manager of musician Black Sherif, has filed a human rights lawsuit against the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney General. Owusu is seeking GH¢5 million in compensation following an incident on June 11, 2026, in Accra.

According to court documents filed at the Human Rights Division of the High Court, four armed officers arrived at Owusu’s residence at approximately 6 a.m. without presenting a warrant or providing a reason for the arrest. Owusu alleges that officers refused his request to dress before being handcuffed and subsequently escorted him through public streets in his boxer shorts. The incident, which occurred in the presence of his four young children, was captured on video and widely circulated on social media platforms.

In addition to the compensation for alleged violations of his constitutional right to human dignity, Owusu is claiming US$80,000 in special damages. He asserts that the viral videos of his arrest caused significant reputational damage and led to the loss of a construction contract.
