Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue sexual assault allegations
An investigative report has uncovered allegations of sexual assault and necrophilia involving female corpses at the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka. Evidence suggests that in November 2025 and January 2026, semen from multiple men was detected in samples taken from deceased women during autopsies.
Investigations into the incidents revealed that CCTV cameras inside the morgue were non-functional at the time, leaving a gap in surveillance. While external cameras tracked the movement of a morgue assistant, hospital authorities stated that internal footage could not be retrieved due to technical failures. A morgue assistant has been identified as a suspect in the preliminary inquiry.
Following the publication of these findings, journalist Dipu Sikdar of the online news outlet ‘Alap’ reported receiving death threats. Sikdar filed a general diary with the Mirpur Police Station, naming a former morgue assistant, Nure Alam Shanto, as a person involved in the intimidation. The Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association (CRAB) has expressed concern over the threats against the journalist.
