Ujjain Shahi Masjid dispute leads to protests and police intervention

Tensions erupted in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, following protests against the partial removal of the historic Shahi Masjid. The demolition is part of a road-widening project intended to prepare the city for the Simhastha 2028 event. The project aims to widen a 900-meter stretch from Kanthal Chauraha to Gopal Mandir to 15 metres.

Clashes occurred between protesters and police, involving reports of stone-pelting and the subsequent use of tear gas and baton charges to disperse crowds. Authorities noted that AI-generated fake videos, which falsely depicted the entire mosque being demolished, contributed to the unrest. Police have detained several individuals and registered FIRs against social media content creators for spreading misinformation.

Following discussions between the administration and the mosque committee, a mutual agreement was reached to remove a small portion of the structure—approximately 3 to 9 feet—and an adjacent shop. The Madhya Pradesh High Court had previously dismissed petitions challenging the administrative action, citing public interest and traffic management needs. The mosque committee has since begun the voluntary removal of the affected section under heavy security presence.
