Shai Gilgeous-Alexander acquires stake in Atlético de Madrid

NBA superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has officially joined the shareholder base of the Spanish La Liga football club Atlético de Madrid. While the specific size of the equity stake and the total investment valuation have not been disclosed, the move is intended to expand the club’s international brand appeal, particularly within North American markets.

The investment follows a corporate restructuring at Atlético de Madrid that includes involvement from the private equity firm Apollo Sports Capital. The club is currently directing capital toward the Ciudad del Deporte infrastructure project near the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium.

Gilgeous-Alexander, a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player and championship winner with the Oklahoma City Thunder, will not hold an executive or sporting role within the club. He described the investment as an opportunity to support the club’s long-term commercial and operational vision, noting the club’s history at the highest level of European football.
