Shai Gilgeous-Alexander focuses on Thunder success amid roster changes

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder are entering the 2026 NBA season following a 2025 championship and a subsequent Western Conference Finals loss to the San Antonio Spurs. Despite significant roster turnover driven by financial considerations—including the departures of Lu Dort, Isaiah Joe, and Aaron Wiggins—the team remains focused on championship contention.

Gilgeous-Alexander, who averaged 31.1 points last season, is currently pursuing a third consecutive MVP award. He noted that he is prioritizing team success over individual accolades, stating, “The decision for MVP is like literally 82 games away.” If successful, he would become the first player in four decades to win three straight MVPs, joining Larry Bird, Bill Russell, and Wilt Chamberlain.

The Thunder's core will be anchored by the return of Jalen Williams and All-NBA selection Chet Holmgren. Guard Alex Caruso emphasized that the organization's identity remains intact despite the personnel changes, while the coaching staff expects increased contributions from players such as Jared McCain, Ajay Mitchell, and Cason Wallace.
