Shailene Woodley discusses cut Mary Jane role in Spider-Man sequel

Actress Shailene Woodley recently reflected on her experience being cast as Mary Jane Watson in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’, a role she described as a “dream” because Spider-Man was her favorite superhero.

Woodley revealed that she filmed approximately three scenes alongside Andrew Garfield before being informed a year later that her character had been cut from the film. According to Woodley, the decision was made to wait until after the character arc involving Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy concluded before introducing Mary Jane. However, the planned follow-up film was never produced.

Director Marc Webb previously addressed the decision, noting that while Woodley is a “brilliant actress,” introducing a competing love interest was difficult given the existing narrative focus on the relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy.
