Shakespeare adaptations staged in Graz and Linz

Recent theatrical productions of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ have debuted in Austria, offering distinct interpretations of the classic tragedy.

In Graz, choreographer Etienne Béchard and Ballett Graz have presented a ballet based on Sergei Prokofiev’s score. This production reimagines the story as an apocalyptic dance thriller set in a post-apocalyptic world where two warring clans fight for survival amidst crumbling order. The performance blends Prokofiev’s intense music with pop songs from the 1960s and 1970s.

At the Landestheater in Linz, director David Bösch staged a play that incorporates elements of cabaret and direct audience interaction. The production features actors performing near the audience and includes real love letters submitted by local citizens. While the first half of the performance was noted for its comedic and acrobatic tone, the second half shifts toward a more dense and emotional atmosphere.
