Shakespearean Macbeth productions explore themes of power and ambition
Different theatrical productions of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth are highlighting the play's enduring relevance to modern themes of power, corruption, and manipulation.
At the Metropolitan Opera, a new production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Macbeth features director Louisa Proske and baritone Quinn Kelsey. The production explores the psychological collapse of the protagonist, tracing his transition from a military hero to a tyrant. Kelsey notes that Macbeth’s sense of responsibility for his own destruction becomes most evident between the third and fourth acts.
In Ceuta, Spain, the Compañía de Teatro Clásico de Sevilla is presenting a production directed by Alfonso Zurro at the Teatro Auditorio del Revellín. Zurro draws parallels between the witches in Shakespeare’s work and contemporary influences such as social media and the manipulation of public opinion through digital imagery.
