Shakira costume plagiarism claim and Salma Hayek‑Belinda clash highlight World Cup 2026 opening controversies
Brazilian stylist Jheniffer Ferreira (known as Jheni) alleges that the skirt worn by Shakira at the FIFA World Cup 2026 opening ceremony was plagiarised by the Italian label Off‑White. Ferreira says her design, originally created for a music video, was sent to Shakira’s team and later appeared on the Off‑White outfit used for the performance, but the brand and Shakira’s representatives have not commented.
During the same ceremony, Mexican actress Salma Hayek, serving as a FIFA ambassador, was photographed with singer Belinda. A video shows Hayek patting Belinda’s arm instead of hugging her, prompting criticism on social media. Belinda later said the interaction was friendly, praising Hayek as “the best” and describing the gesture as a “good‑luck pat”. Both incidents have sparked debate about etiquette and originality in the high‑profile opening event, which also featured performances by Shakira, Maná, Danny Ocean, J Balvin and Los Ángeles Azules.
