Shakira pledges $1.25 million to rebuild Colombian schools after earthquake

Following a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10, singer Shakira has pledged $1.25 million to aid in the reconstruction of educational infrastructure in the Chocó region. During a visit to Quibdó, Shakira announced that the funds, distributed through her Fundación Pies Descalzos, will be supported by partners including Live Nation ($500,000), the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund ($500,000), and the CAF Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean ($250,000).

The earthquake caused significant damage, with reports indicating approximately 200 schools were affected and 40 were completely destroyed. The disaster resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries. In addition to the primary pledge, philanthropist Howard Buffett announced that his foundation will separately support the construction of 10 additional schools in the region.
