Following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Colombia, singer Shakira has announced a major initiative to rebuild educational infrastructure in the Chocó department. During a visit to Quibdó, she pledged personal efforts to assist in the reconstruction of the Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó, which sustained damage during the seismic event.

In collaboration with philanthropist Howard Graham Buffett and the Fundación Pies Descalzos, Shakira aims to construct ten new schools to provide safe learning environments for local youth. The relief effort is supported by a combined $1 million donation from Global Citizen and Live Nation, providing $500,000 each for initial reconstruction costs.

The earthquake, which occurred on August 10 near San José del Palmar, has caused significant devastation, including nearly 300 deaths and damage to over 200 educational facilities. Shakira called upon governments, private companies, and international organizations to support the long-term recovery of the region to ensure the Chocó department is not forgotten.
