Shakira headlines opening ceremony of FIFA World Cup 2026 in Mexico City

The 2026 FIFA World Cup opened on 11 June 2026 at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca with a 90‑minute ceremony before the Mexico vs South Africa match. Pop star Shakira performed the tournament’s official song “Dai Dai” live with Nigerian singer Burna Boy, joined by artists such as J Balvin, Maná, Lila Downs and Andrea Bocelli. The show was part of three separate opening events planned for the three host nations – Mexico, the United States and Canada – each featuring local and international performers.

The ceremony was broadcast in Germany on ZDF and via the subscription service MagentaTV, beginning at 19:30 CET. Organisers noted security concerns due to teacher protests in Mexico City and the threat of thunderstorms. The tournament is the largest in history, featuring 48 national teams, 104 matches and lasting five weeks across the three North‑American hosts.
