Shambhala Festival traffic enforcement sees 57 vehicles towed and 78 drug‑impaired driving investigations

The 2026 Shambhala Music Festival attracted more than 50,000 attendees to the Salmo River Ranch in British Columbia. During the four‑day event, BC Highway Patrol and the RCMP conducted 601 traffic stops. Police issued a total of 378 traffic tickets, including 311 for speeding, seven for excessive speed, ten for seat‑belt violations, two for using an electronic device while driving, and 11 for driving without insurance.

Two roadblocks were set up after the festival, resulting in 57 vehicles being towed for mechanical safety or driver impairment, 51 immediate 24‑hour driving suspensions for suspected drug impairment, and eight vehicles removed for serious mechanical defects. Officers also performed 85 standardized field sobriety tests, 30 drug‑recognition evaluations (producing 27 drug‑impaired driving investigations and 23 blood samples), and issued 50 additional traffic violation tickets.

Sgt. Michael McLaughlin of BC Highway Patrol said the high number of uninsured and speeding drivers was “particularly concerning” and warned that similar enforcement will likely return next year. The operation was supported by Nelson Police and drug‑recognition experts from across the province.
