Shandong woman appeals decision on stepfather's alleged long-term abuse
A 31-year-old woman in Shandong, China, has come forward with allegations that she was sexually abused by her stepfather for eight years, starting when she was nine years old.
The victim, identified by the pseudonym Zhang, reported that the abuse occurred between 2003 and 2010. Although the Lanling County Procuratorate determined that the stepfather, identified as Zhang Yaosheng, was suspected of child molestation, the authorities decided not to prosecute because the statute of limitations for the crimes had expired.
Zhang has filed an appeal with higher-level procuratorial organs, requesting that the charges be upgraded to rape and that criminal responsibility be pursued. She expressed deep distress over her adoptive mother's reaction, alleging that her mother urged her to “just let it go” and failed to support her pursuit of justice.
Zhang stated she decided to go public to raise awareness and encourage others in similar situations to seek legal help within the permitted timeframes.
