Shane Getson resigns from Alberta legislature
Shane Getson, a two-term United Conservative Party (UCP) backbencher, has resigned from the Alberta legislature effective immediately. Representing the Lac. Ste. Anne-Parkland riding since 2019, Getson cited personal and family reasons for his departure, stating he could no longer provide the necessary time and attention to his role.
During his seven years in office, Getson served as a UCP caucus whip but never held a cabinet position. He was known for controversial political stances, including opposition to COVID-19 restrictions and vaccine mandates, and support for convoy protesters. He previously drew significant backlash for comparing transgender surgery to livestock castration during a legislative debate.
In his farewell statement, Getson urged constituents to avoid “wackado woke, DEI, socialist easy fix for nothing ideas” and encouraged people to listen to different perspectives.
