Shane Jones accuses kiwifruit industry of exploitative labour practices

New Zealand First deputy leader Shane Jones has accused the kiwifruit industry in the Bay of Plenty of employing “medieval slave practices.” Speaking at a public meeting in Lower Hutt, Jones alleged that migrant groups are being exploited, noting that the United States has previously raised concerns regarding forced labour in New Zealand's supply chains.

Jones also called for a review of the laws governing Zespri and criticized the National Party’s proposals regarding regional government restructuring. He stated that New Zealand First intends to campaign on the abolition of regional councils.

These allegations come as the political landscape shifts ahead of the 2026 election. While Trade Minister Todd McClay previously rejected claims of forced labour in New Zealand trade, Jones’ comments highlight ongoing tensions regarding worker treatment in a major export sector that is vital to both the national economy and Māori-owned businesses.
