Shanghai and Hamburg expand maritime and AI cooperation
To mark the 40th anniversary of their sister-city partnership, Shanghai and Hamburg are deepening cooperation in smart ports, green shipping, and technological innovation. The partnership aims to enhance maritime efficiency and environmental sustainability through the development of an ecological maritime corridor.
Key initiatives include the inauguration of a joint climate science and engineering laboratory in the Qingpu district, a collaboration between the Hamburg University of Technology and Feishu China. Additionally, the cities are expanding exchange programs in youth, arts, culture, and tourism.
Economic ties remain significant, with approximately 30 percent of containers handled in the Port of Hamburg originating from or destined for China. Hamburg serves as a gateway for Chinese firms into European markets, while the Port of Shanghai acts as a primary entry point for German companies into Asia. During a visit to China, Hamburg's First Mayor Peter Tschentscher emphasized the commitment to deepening these ties despite shifts in the international landscape.
