Shanghai Grand Opera House opens as new cultural landmark

The Shanghai Grand Opera House is set to open along the Huangpu River, serving as a new cultural landmark for the city. Designed by the Norwegian architecture studio Snøhetta, the venue is intended to integrate world-class performing arts with an accessible public realm.

The structure features a sculptural design with a roof that functions as a public promenade and observation deck, inviting visitors to walk across the building. The architecture is intended to respond to the ebb and flow of the river. Inside, the facility spans approximately 146,786 square meters and includes three auditoriums with a total capacity of 4,200 seats, accommodating various performances from traditional opera to classical music.
