Shanghai police dismantle luxury persona fraud scheme
Police in the Minhang District of Shanghai have dismantled a sophisticated financial fraud scheme involving a woman surnamed Li, who posed as a wealthy socialite to defraud vulnerable workers.
Li reportedly rented a luxury villa and maintained a facade of success by claiming to own a thriving cosmetics factory. To build trust, she lived a lavish lifestyle and frequently gave small gifts to domestic workers and local small-scale traders.
Using this false persona, Li targeted at least six victims, primarily domestic workers and small merchants, stealing a total of more than $70,000 USD. One victim, a domestic worker named Ms. Xu, reported that Li used excuses regarding factory capital shortages to delay salary payments and coerced her into lending significant sums of money.
