Shanghai woman sues son for $54,000 in childcare reimbursement

A woman in Shanghai, China, has sued her son for more than 360,000 yuan (approximately $54,000) to reimburse costs incurred while raising her granddaughter for 15 years. The woman, identified as Ms. Xu, took on the primary responsibility for the child's upbringing, including covering living expenses, medical bills, and tuition, after her son's divorce in 2014.

Ms. Xu alleges that her son failed to fulfill his parental obligations and family responsibilities. Her son, Mr. Liang, contends that he provided support to the best of his ability based on his limited income at the time. Tensions escalated after Mr. Liang remarried and moved out, leaving the child in Ms. Xu's care. Financial pressure eventually led her to seek legal recourse.

This case has sparked a broader debate in China regarding whether grandparental childcare should be viewed as a familial duty or a form of caregiving labor that warrants financial compensation. Similar legal actions have been reported in Beijing, where grandparents also sued their children for reimbursement of childcare expenses.
