Shanghai woman uses AI to impersonate doctor in 170,000 yuan fraud

A 65-year-old woman in Shanghai, identified as Yu Xiuzhen, allegedly used artificial intelligence to impersonate a 29-year-old doctor to defraud a man of 170,000 yuan (approximately 650 million VND or RM110,000).

Yu reportedly built a fake online persona, posting nearly 7,000 videos to attract followers and establish credibility. She claimed to be a doctor at a prestigious hospital and promised the victim, a construction contractor named Liu Hui, access to hospital engineering projects. Over five months, Liu transferred funds to Yu after she claimed her mother disapproved of their relationship and demanded a dowry and property purchase in Shanghai.

Police investigations revealed that Yu is actually a hospital cleaner with no medical qualifications. She used AI to alter her appearance and create images of a young doctor, and even used AI to impersonate her own mother to deceive Liu. The bank account used to receive the money was registered to another individual.
