Shania Twain recalls difficult early career performing in bars

Country music singer Shania Twain has shared details regarding the challenges she faced during the early stages of her career. In an interview with American Songwriter, the 61-year-old artist described experiencing stage fright due to the uncomfortable environments in which she performed.

Twain noted that her early gigs often took place in smoky bars late at night, frequently around midnight, which she felt was inappropriate for her age at the time. She recalled breathing in thick smoke and performing for audiences that were largely intoxicated and predominantly male. These late-night performances often conflicted with her school schedule the following mornings.

Despite these hardships, Twain credited the positive responses from audiences for helping her build confidence. She noted that the applause helped her realize she was a standout performer. She also mentioned that she began incorporating her own original music into her sets during this period, which she found enjoyable.
