Shankar Mahadevan reveals recording process for ‘Koi Kahe’

Music composer Shankar Mahadevan revealed that the song ‘Koi Kahe’ from the film ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ was recorded using a unique post-production process. During a discussion with fellow composers Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa, as well as singer Shaan, it was disclosed that all three primary vocalists—Shankar Mahadevan, Shaan, and the late KK—sang the entire song separately.

To achieve a seamless sound, the individual recordings were edited and divided during post-production. Shaan noted that while they were in the recording booth together, the vocal tracks were recorded individually, though the final result creates the illusion of a unified performance.

Ehsaan Noorani also shared an anecdote regarding the song's cultural impact, noting it was one of the first Hindi songs to gain significant traction in western-style clubs.
