Shaoxing to host 2026 World Cleanup Day celebrations

Shaoxing, located in China's eastern Zhejiang province, has been selected to host the 2026 World Cleanup Day celebrations. This marks the first time China will host the global event.

Cecilia Andersson, a lead for program and waste management at UN-Habitat, announced during a press conference in Shaoxing that the event will take place from September 19 to 21, 2026. The theme for the celebrations is ‘From clean plates to clean cities.’

Wang Shengjun, chief economist at the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, stated that the event's principles align with China's efforts to build modern, people-centered cities. Shaoxing has already implemented local ecological initiatives, including the ‘Finish everything on your plate’ campaign to reduce food waste and various domestic waste sorting programs.

The hosting of the event coincides with China's national efforts to improve waste management and environmental remediation. In January, the country released an action plan aimed at significantly increasing solid waste treatment capacity over the next five years.
