Shapefarm removes single-player mode from Orbitals to focus on co-op

Shapefarm has confirmed that its upcoming title, Orbitals, will feature a strictly two-player cooperative mode, having removed an original single-player option during development. Game Director Jakob Lundgren explained that the decision was made to ensure the gameplay mechanics fully require teamwork and interdependence.

Lundgren stated that allowing a solo mode would prevent the team from designing challenges that necessitate true reliance on a partner, as the game would still need to be completable alone. By committing to a pure co-op experience, the developers aim to avoid ‘doing both bits but not doing it fully.’

Orbitals is set to release exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 3, 2026. The game features an intergalactic adventure inspired by retro anime, where players control characters Maki and Omura to navigate the Storm Wall. The title will support asymmetric co-op via local split-screen or online play.
