Shaperon secures Japanese patent for NuSepin combination therapy

Shaperon has received a patent registration from the Japan Patent Office for a therapeutic composition combining its drug candidate, NuSepin, with antiviral agents. This follows the company's successful acquisition of intellectual property rights in South Korea.

NuSepin is an intravenous candidate designed to inhibit the NLRP3 inflammasome, a key regulator of inflammatory responses. The company aims to expand its indications to include various viral respiratory diseases, specifically targeting Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS).

In a global Phase 2b clinical trial involving 175 patients with severe COVID-19-related ARDS across 15 medical institutions in five countries, the NuSepin group showed a 3.5 times higher probability of recovery within the first five days compared to the placebo group. The trial also demonstrated a significant reduction in C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and reported no serious drug-related adverse events.

Shaperon plans to leverage this clinical data to enter the ARDS treatment market, which is projected to reach approximately 4.4 trillion KRW by 2036. The company is also exploring development for respiratory complications related to malaria.
