Shaquille O'Neal discusses LeBron James's Lakers legacy and business advice
Shaquille O'Neal has commented on LeBron James's historical standing within the Los Angeles Lakers organization. O'Neal suggested that while James has achieved success, including a championship, he does not occupy the same historical tier as legends like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, and Kobe Bryant, who secured more titles with the franchise. O'Neal used a metaphor to describe James's status, stating that while James is “at the party,” he is “not on the stage.”
Despite these comments regarding legacy, O'Neal defended James against critics who labeled him a “ring chaser” following his move to the Philadelphia 76ers. O'Neal argued that James is practicing “ring continuity” rather than chasing titles, noting that James has already won championships through various career stages.
In a separate reflection on his career, O'Neal credited Magic Johnson for advising him to focus on business and branding. O'Neal expressed a desire to build a brand that “lives forever,” similar to icons like Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe, which has driven his extensive post-career business investments.
