Shaquille O'Neal reveals Marvel rejected Avengers role due to fame
NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal has revealed that Marvel Studios declined his long-standing interest in joining the Avengers franchise. In an interview with Variety, O’Neal explained that studio executives felt his immense celebrity status would prevent audiences from seeing him as a fictional character.
O’Neal noted that executives told him, “if your face pops up on screen people are going to go, ‘Hey, that’s Shaq!’” He added that this issue extends beyond Marvel, as Hollywood decision-makers have suggested his high level of recognizability makes it difficult for him to portray believable roles, such as a doctor, in dramatic or action-oriented narratives.
While O’Neal previously starred as a DC Comics character in the 1997 film “Steel,” his aspirations for the Marvel Cinematic Universe remain unfulfilled. He expressed interest in future projects, including a desire to share the screen with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The comments were made while promoting his new professional dunking competition, the Dunkman League.
