Sharad Pawar urges protection of Tata Group’s philanthropic legacy

Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar has called for the protection of the Tata Group’s philanthropic legacy and trust-led ownership model following governance disputes within Tata Sons.

Pawar emphasized that the group’s foundational vision, established by Jamsetji Tata and continued by Sir Dorabji Tata and Sir Ratan Tata, ensures business wealth is redirected toward social welfare. Currently, philanthropic entities including the Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust hold approximately 66 per cent of Tata Sons' equity. Dividends from these holdings fund critical sectors such as public health, education, research, and rural livelihoods.

Pawar raised concerns regarding a September 17 Tata Sons board meeting where a 4-1 vote approved a five-year extension for Executive Chairman N. Chandrasekaran and moves toward listing Tata Sons on stock exchanges. Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata reportedly voted against these proposals. Pawar questioned the legal validity of these resolutions, suggesting that the company’s Articles of Association may require affirmative consent from trust nominees for such key decisions.
