Sharad Purnima 2026 religious significance and traditions

Sharad Purnima, also known as Raas Purnima or Kojagari Purnima, will be observed on October 25, 2026. According to the Hindu calendar, the Purnima तिथि begins at 11:55 AM on October 25 and concludes at 9:41 AM on October 26.

In Hindu tradition, this day holds significant spiritual importance as the moon is believed to reach its full sixteen phases, emitting rays that provide health benefits and positive energy. A key tradition involves placing rice pudding (kheer) under the open sky overnight to absorb the moon's medicinal and divine qualities. For 2026, it is suggested to place the kheer under the sky after 8:00 PM.

The festival involves the worship of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu to seek prosperity and peace. Religious practices include bathing early, wearing clean clothes, and performing specific rituals such as offering red flowers and reciting the Shri Sukta. Some traditions also suggest placing seven yellow cowrie shells and Gomti Chakras in the prayer area to invoke the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi.
