Sharangan Maheswaran testifies at ICAC regarding David Elliott
Sharangan Maheswaran, a former lawyer for developer Jean Nassif, provided evidence to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) regarding an alleged attempt to influence media coverage of former police minister David Elliott.
Maheswaran testified that he offered $1,000 to lobbyist Jeremy Greenwood to help secure a news story alleging that Elliott had breached COVID-19 restrictions during an affair. Maheswaran stated to the commission that the offer was “not a serious offer.”
The inquiry, part of Operation Rosny, is also investigating whether Nassif sought to damage Elliott’s political career, as the two were reportedly long-time enemies. Maheswaran, a former Labor councillor, is a person of interest in the inquiry and faces accusations of blackmailing former Strathfield mayor Matthew Blackmore and illegally recording a fellow councillor.
Evidence presented to the commission included text exchanges between Maheswaran and Greenwood, as well as details regarding surveillance conducted on Elliott. Elliott has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
