Shardiya Navratri 2026: Key dates and ritual traditions

Shardiya Navratri 2026 is scheduled to begin on 11 October, following the Ashwina Shukla Pratipada tithi. According to astrological observations, Goddess Durga will arrive on an elephant (Gaja), a sign considered auspicious.

Key dates for the festival include Durga Ashtami (Maha Ashtami), which falls on 18 October 2026 in most Indian calendars, though some may observe it on 19 October depending on the tithi window. This day is dedicated to Maa Mahagauri and is marked by significant rituals such as Sandhi Puja and Kanya Pujan.

In preparation for the festivities, traditional practices emphasize spiritual cleanliness. Vastu Shastra suggests removing broken idols, damaged religious pictures, and non-functional electronic items from the home to avoid attracting negative energy and to create a positive atmosphere for the deity.
