Shared mobility market enters new phase of restructuring

The shared mobility market is entering a new phase characterized by restructuring, acquisitions, and strategic shifts among major industry players. Recent developments include the acquisition of a leading European peer-to-peer car rental provider by a Danish company and Stellantis’s decision to divest Free2move.

Industry experts suggest that while some manufacturers are withdrawing from direct service operations, this does not signal a total disengagement from the sector. Instead, it reflects a re-evaluation of how manufacturers contribute to mobility. The shift highlights a distinction between vehicle production and the operational demands of mobility services, such as fleet management, maintenance, and customer relations, which require different capital models and expertise.

To achieve economic viability, the sector must now focus on reaching critical mass and pooling costs related to technology, insurance, payments, and data management.
