Shareholder activism reaches record levels in 2026

Shareholder activism reached record levels in the first half of 2026, characterized by a surge in global campaigns and a shift toward strategic challenges. Data from Lazard indicates 184 new campaigns were recorded globally in the first six months, representing a 20 percent increase over the previous year and nearly 40 percent above the five-year average for that period.

In the United States, Diligent Market Intelligence reported that over 400 companies faced activist demands, with push-for-sale requests increasing by nearly 50 percent. Activism is increasingly viewed as a year-round condition rather than a seasonal event. Recent trends show that demands are moving upstream, with strategy-focused campaigns—challenging capital allocation and AI deployment—accounting for twice their historical share of activity.

Despite the high volume of activity, most campaigns are resolved through settlements rather than proxy fights. Wachtell Lipton notes that approximately 40 percent of campaigns involve an M&A-related thesis. While the proxy voting system is becoming more fragmented due to the use of AI by large investors and shifts in institutional voting teams, companies with strong strategic conviction are increasingly successful when taking proxy fights to a vote.
