SharePoint intranet accessibility depends on editorial quality
Digital accessibility in SharePoint intranets is driven more by editorial practices than by technical infrastructure. While platforms like SharePoint provide a solid technical foundation, true accessibility depends on the daily decisions made by content creators.
Key requirements include following WCAG 2.1 guidelines, such as providing meaningful alternative text for images, maintaining a proper heading hierarchy, and using descriptive link names instead of generic terms like ‘click here’. For public institutions, accessibility is a legal requirement under BITV 2.0, and for B2C services, it is partially mandated by the BFSG. To be effective, accessibility must be integrated into editorial training rather than treated as a final checklist before a system goes live.
