Sharjah deploys AI cameras on buses and taxis to enhance safety
The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has deployed artificial intelligence-powered smart surveillance cameras across its public transport network to enhance safety and operational efficiency.
Intercity buses are now equipped with 10 smart cameras located both inside and outside the vehicles to monitor road conditions, passenger movement, and driver behavior. Taxis have been fitted with five smart cameras providing comprehensive coverage of the vehicle interior and the road.
The AI system is capable of detecting objects and pedestrians, monitoring side crossings, analyzing driver behavior, counting passengers, and identifying accidents or lost items. These capabilities allow for real-time alerts to improve response times to incidents.
SRTA Chairman Yousef Khamis Al Othmani stated that the investment aims to build a safer, more sustainable transport system aligned with international practices. Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Jarwan, Director of Transport Affairs at SRTA, noted that the technology serves as a fundamental pillar for developing smart services that meet community expectations.
