South Africa shark attack kills 65-year-old swimmer

A 65-year-old woman, Janine Lochrenberg, was killed in a shark attack on Tuesday morning while swimming at Orient Beach in KuGompo City (formerly East London), South Africa. Lochrenberg, a retired nuclear radiographer and musician, was swimming with a local open-water swimming club when she signaled for help.

Witnesses reported that she sustained severe bite wounds to her thigh and upper arm. Despite efforts by fellow swimmers and a medic to provide emergency care and bring her to shore, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Reports indicate she was wearing a magnetic shark-repellent ankle band at the time of the incident.

In response to the tragedy, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality has closed Orient Beach and the nearby Eastern Beach until further notice. Authorities have urged the public to exercise extreme caution and stay out of the water in the affected areas. The South African Police Service has opened an inquest to investigate the circumstances of the death.
