Shark pups gather in record numbers in Fernando de Noronha's Baía do Sueste

Around 60 lemon‑shark (Negaprion brevirostris) pups were filmed swimming together in the shallow waters of Baía do Sueste, a protected zone of the Fernando de Noronha archipelago. The area, where bathing and diving are prohibited, serves as a safe nursery free from larger predators. Researchers said the concentration is exceptional and signals strong environmental balance.

Mariana Rêgo, coordinator of the Projeto Ecotuba at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco, noted that such a high number of juveniles has only previously been observed at Atol das Rocas. The footage was captured by visitor guide Rogério Silva and quickly spread on social media, highlighting the bay’s ideal conditions—protection from predators, abundant food, and stable salinity and temperature—for young sharks to develop.
