Shark researchers tag predators off New York's Hamptons

Marine researchers are conducting tagging and release operations off the coast of the Hamptons, New York, to better understand local shark populations. The area serves as one of the world’s few confirmed great white shark nurseries, where young predators feed and grow during their vulnerable early years.

Researchers, including Greg Metzger and Stony Brook University scientist Bradley Peterson, are attaching various data collection devices to sharks, such as sand tiger sharks. These include acoustic tags that relay location to coastal receivers and tags that measure water temperature and depth. Data from these devices has shown that sharks travel vast distances, with tags being detected as far south as Georgia, Florida, and the Gulf of Mexico before the animals return to the New York coast the following year.
