Sharks defeat LOU Rugby 40-33 in dramatic Challenge Cup opener
The Sharks secured a dramatic 40-33 victory against LOU Rugby in their EPCR Challenge Cup opener at the Stade de Gerland. Despite a late converted try by Lyon's Baptiste Couilloud that brought the score to 33-33, Sharks winger Litelihle Bester scored in the 82nd minute to clinch the win.
The defeat marks LOU Rugby's fourth consecutive loss, a period head coach Karim Ghezal described as a “zone of turbulence” as the team prepares for Top 14 fixtures. The Lyon side struggled with defensive errors and an inability to maintain rhythm against the South African visitors.
For the Sharks, the win was emotionally significant following the death of former player Hyron Andrews. Head coach JP Pietersen stated that the team would dedicate the victory to Andrews, noting that the performance demonstrated the squad's “identity” and character during their overseas tour.
