Sharlene Mawdsley withdraws from European Athletics Championships
Irish athlete Sharlene Mawdsley has withdrawn from the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham due to a hamstring injury. The injury occurred during the 200m sprint final at the National Championships, where she pulled up after 80 meters.
Mawdsley, who had been in exceptional form this season with four personal bests in the 400m, was scheduled to compete in both the individual 400m and the women's 4x400m relay. In a statement, she expressed her sadness, noting, “We made huge progress after I was diagnosed with a tear in my hamstring, but unfortunately the timing just wasn’t on my side.”
Following her withdrawal, Sophie Becker will be Ireland's sole representative in the women's individual 400m event. Rhasidat Adeleke will compete in the 200m and the 4x400m relay.
