Sharon D. Clarke's Othello production postponed for cancer treatment

The Royal Shakespeare Company has announced the postponement of its upcoming production of ‘Othello’ as lead actress Sharon D. Clarke begins cancer treatment. The production, directed by Monique Touko, was originally scheduled to run from February 13 to April 3, 2027.

Clarke, an acclaimed actress known for her roles in ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘Holby City’, is central to this specific reimagining of the Shakespearean tragedy, which explores the play through the lens of misogynoir and features a Black lesbian protagonist. The creative team decided to delay the production to allow Clarke time to focus on her recovery.

In a statement, Clarke expressed gratitude for the support received from the RSC and her community, stating, “Othello will be my north star as I undergo treatment.” Director Monique Touko also voiced support, describing Clarke as the “ultimate collaborator” and expressing hope to revisit the project when the time is right.

Ticket holders for the original dates will receive automatic refunds, and the Royal Shakespeare Company will announce a new production schedule at a later date.
