Sharon Horgan premieres midlife comedy series ‘Youth’ on HBO

Youth HBO series Sharon Horgan midlife comedy autofiction streaming premiere

Sharon Horgan has premiered her new HBO comedy series, ‘Youth’, which explores the complexities of midlife. The eight-episode series follows Alex, a 50-year-old London-based literary agent, as she navigates the challenges of being part of the ‘sandwich generation’. Her character manages a demanding career, a dating life following a divorce, and the increasing needs of both her aging parents and her teenage son, Ruarí.

Horgan, who also writes and produces the show, has described the series as a form of autofiction, drawing on her own life experiences and the ‘seismic changes’ she has faced, including her own divorce. The series is considered a spiritual successor to her previous works, ‘Pulling’ and ‘Catastrophe’, continuing her exploration of life’s transitions through a lens of dark humor and emotional vulnerability.

The show features a cast including Aran Murphy as Alex’s son, Sharlene Whyte as her friend and boss Sam, and Rupert Friend. New episodes are scheduled to release weekly on Sundays on HBO and stream on HBO Max.
