Shasta County plans to hire Tina Peters as elections consultant

Shasta County, a conservative region in northern California, plans to hire Tina Peters as an elections consultant or assistant registrar of voters. Peters, a former Mesa County, Colorado clerk, was previously convicted on seven counts of election interference in August 2024 and was recently released from prison.

Shasta County Registrar of Voters Clint Curtis stated that Peters would serve as a consultant to replace a top deputy currently on medical leave. Curtis noted that Peters would not have access to the county’s voting systems. The proposed salary for the position ranges between $43,368 and $62,232 per annum.

Shasta County has been a focal point for election denialism activism. In 2023, the county’s governing body attempted to sever ties with Dominion Voting Systems in favor of a hand-count system, though the state ultimately blocked that effort. Curtis, an attorney appointed to the role who has expressed opposition to voting machines, has faced controversy regarding his leadership and allegations of creating a hostile work environment.
