Shaun Parsons examines crypto asset challenges to tax systems
During an inaugural lecture at the University of Cape Town, Professor Shaun Parsons addressed the challenges that the rise of crypto assets poses to traditional taxation systems. He explored whether regulatory frameworks designed for conventional economies can effectively manage technologies that redefine how value is created, owned, and exchanged.
Parsons examined several critical questions facing policymakers and revenue authorities, including whether crypto assets should be classified as money, what constitutes a taxable event, and how transactions should be characterized. He also highlighted the difficulty of enforcing taxation within decentralized and pseudonymous environments.
Drawing on his background as a chartered accountant and his observations of the Global Financial Crisis, Parsons noted that the disillusionment with traditional banking following the collapse of Lehman Brothers provided the context for the emergence of Bitcoin. He argued that the shift toward models based on cryptographic proof rather than trusted third parties represents a significant evolution in the world of taxation.
