Shaw and Barrera clash in California education debate

Candidates Sonja Shaw and Richard Barrera engaged in an aggressive debate regarding the future of California’s TK-12 education system. During the EdSource-hosted event, the two candidates presented conflicting philosophies for the State Superintendent of Public Instruction role.

Shaw focused her platform on parental rights and fundamental learning. Barrera, who serves as the president of the San Diego Unified School District board, emphasized inclusive policies, the empowerment of teachers, and the importance of community schools. The debate also touched upon testing, LGBTQ+ students, and the influence of national politics in local schools.
