Shawn Brown wins 2026 Ranger of the Year award in Australia
Senior ranger Shawn Brown of Hilltops Council was presented with the 2026 Ranger of the Year award by the Australian Institute of Local Government at its annual workshop in Penrith. Brown’s role spans animal control, noise complaints, parking, traffic matters, abandoned vehicles and broader community safety across a 7,100‑square‑kilometre area that includes Young, Boorowa and Harden‑Murrumburrah.
During the past financial year he helped rehome 127 companion animals (46 cats and 81 dogs), facilitated veterinary services for more than 100 animals and oversaw microchipping of over 200 pets. As chair of the Hilltops Council Companion Animals Advisory Committee, he has worked with groups such as the RSPCA, Warm Paws and Australian Working Dog to improve education and support for local pet owners. Council acting general manager Sarah Karaitiana said the award reflects Brown’s contributions to both animal welfare and community safety.
